Ruapehu region lies midway in the North Island between Auckland & Wellington. The main settlements in this region are Taumarunui, Ohakune & National park Village.

Being the premier skiing area in the North Island, the ski fields of Mt Ruapehu, WhakapapaTuroa & Tukino are situated around Mt Ruapehu. These become particularly busy during the winter months of June to August when many skiers settle here to enjoy the best of the snow.

In the summer months, many people make the celebrated walk over the Tongariro Crossing, regarded as one of the world's great walks.

As well as New Zealand's oldest national park, Tongariro, the Ruapehu region is also home to The National Park, Whanganui National Park and the start of the Whanganui River.
