The First National Park in New Zealand and Established in 1887 was The Tongariro National Park. The Chateau Tongariro is a beautiful Hotel dating back to 1929 and is located in the center of the National Park at Whakapapa Village.
The small town of Waiouru is on the main Dessert Road and the home of the National Army Museum, which is open 7 days a week from 9.00am to 4.30pm
Raetihi is a small town and the gateway to Mt Ruapehu and is a place of the NZ Outdoor Lifestyle. With Rivers and Mountains its the perfect location for biking and hiking. The Waimarino Museum is worth a visit.
The town of Ohakune is known as the Carrot Capital, the perfect place to base yourself during the summer for visits into the Tongariro National Park and also the main Ski Village in the Winter for visitors to the Slopes.
Home to the wonderful Whanganui River the National Park offers a place to explore the natural beauty of this area. With the great outdoors available for Hiking, Biking, Fishing or Kayaking as you drift past the lowland forests.
